How to Wear Velvet + Giveaway
How to Wear Velvet + Giveaway
It has been a while since I have done an official "Fashion Friday"post! I am excited to share with you my recent collaboration with blogger Jessica Loera of Champagne and Shimmer on this #fashionfriday.
We are also doing a beautiful clutch giveaway, keep reading to enter!
A little background....
Jessica and I have known one another since high school, which I already can't believe has been more than 10 years ago! She and I shared a love of cheerleading and dancing, and cheered together on our high school squad (GO Southridge Suns!) wayyyyyy back in the day.
Jessica has been the owner and blogger of Champagne and Shimmer for a few years now and I've followed since her beginning. She has already inspired me in so many ways, including fashion, recipes, workouts, and even travel. Plus I can't get enough of seeing her adorable pics of her baby Leo. If you haven't already been to her blog, check out www.champagneandshimmer.com.
Jessica has recently made the move back to Tri-Cities, so I thought the timing was perfect to reach out to her and do some fun collaborations. I can't wait to share with you everything coming up!
Jessica and I are also doing a giveaway for a fabulous velvet clutch from Express. Keep reading to find out how to enter the giveaway (entry form and rules at the bottom)
How to Style Velvet Pants
The first of our collabs starts with taking a trend two different ways. If you haven't noticed (or watched my fall trends video, available here), velvet is a huge trend right now.
I personally love velvet, especially during the holiday season. It is such a rich and luxe texture, perfect for dressing glam or casually. Deep down, I gravitate towards it since velvet gives me all the middle school feelings again!
Jessica and I decided to take on this trend and style it in two different ways, starting with velvet pants. This week I'll share how I styled velvet in a dressy way, and next week I will share Jessica's styling of a more casual approach.
I started with black velvet pants for a definite slimming effect. Although velvet can be unforgiving, when worn in all black it can actually have a slimming shape.
Velvet black is the darkest fabric color available, so ultimately it helped my short legs look leaner (as darker colors recede, making things look smaller).
Once I had my pants picked out, I was dying to wear an off the shoulder top. This flowy and very comfortable floral off-the-shoulder top by Chelsea28 + Olivia Palermo, is available at Nordstrom. I added a barely there front tuck just to keep from losing my waistline.
As you know, my signature style is very feminine (don't know your signature style? Start watching my style series, the first one is available here). With that in mind, I decided to pull out the blush colors from the top throughout the rest of my look with: a nude belt, pink pearl bracelet, and rose gold watch by Michael Kors (links for shopping my look at the bottom).
To really add a feminine and girly touch, I added blush metallic Prada pumps that are actually comfortable!
The key to accessorizing an off the shoulder or wide neck blouse is to use a short necklace, preferably a choker length.
I typically don't advise trying too many trends all at once, but it seems like the choker trend and off-the-shoulder look were a match made in fashion heaven. The two silhouettes go hand in hand.
Again, it doesn't necessarily HAVE to be a choker paired with a wide neckline, but stick to something short in length that just drapes around the base of your neck. This will help keep your necklace from competing with your blouse.
This particular choker was actually hand-made by Bre, the owner of Fugio designs. She sells all of her hand-made jewelry at Threads in downtown Kennewick, or you can find her on instagram @fudiodesigns.
Velvet for EACH Body Shape
What is the secret to wearing velvet? Making sure to accentuate your assets.
Pear shape: Try it in a black bottom, skirt or pants (not in a color, as this will make your legs look bigger). If you want to wear velvet in a color as a pear shape, wear the color on your blouse/top half to make this area seem proportional. You could also try a velvet fit and flare dress, or a velvet body suit with a skirt to draw the eye towards your smaller upper half.
V-shaped bodies: Definitely try a colored velvet on your bottom half since you have the legs to pull it off! Typically, a V-shaped body will have lean legs, so you can really play with both texture and color on your lower half.
Apple shaped: Look for velvet in an accessory, like a necklace or bracelet. OR if you really want to showcase velvet, look for a pair of shoes in a rich velvet texture. Sam Edelman has super pretty velvet pumps or check out a pair of velvet sneakers like these by Steve Madden.
Hourglass: Lucky you! You can really play up your shape with velvet in a lot of ways. You could try a body-con velvet dress that shows all your curves, or a plunging v-neck top to show your figure. You could even try a velvet belt to really play up your small waist.
Rectangle Shapes: Since you want to create the illusion of more curves, look for velvet details in ruffles or ruching (especially ruching around the waist, or some sort of gathering waistline). I would suggest an off shoulder top or wide-neckline velvet blouse to visually create more curves and a smaller waist.
All shapes: If you are still gun-shy about incorporating velvet into your look, dabble in the velvet pool with accessories!
I am loving this velvet choker from Chloe and Isabel, available here. Velvet is literally available in all accessories right now, everything from jewelry, belts, shoes, and even purses come in a variety of velvet textures.
Stay tuned for next week when I share how Jessica styled her velvet pants in a completely different way!
